Walter Houston, a member of the Cheshire East Green Party, has submitted a response to the Guardian in reaction to an article authored by Andy Beckett, which was published in today’s print edition. The article addresses the potential establishment of a new left-wing political party.
What is the point of setting up yet another party of the left when one already exists demanding all that is wanted by the progressives quoted by Andy Beckett (Journal, 15 Nov.) and more, which gained over 1.8 million votes in the general election and already has four MPs? What prevents them from simply moving to the Green Party (or rather parties, depending on where they live)? Why should they be in rivalry with the Greens, as Beckett suggests? A strengthened Green Party would be perfectly placed to challenge Labour from the left and fight at once for social justice and climate action.
